African power sector set to converge at POWER-GEN Africa, DistribuTECH Africa

Against the backdrop of Eskom’s system emergency, around 3,000 key power sector stakeholders from across the continent and abroad are set to travel to South Africa this month for POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa, to be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 17 - 19 March.

As Africa’s power challenges, liberalisation of power utilities and alternative power generation top global agendas, delegates at POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa will assess the landscape, discuss the challenges and identify strategies for power generation and distribution in future.

The events, co-located for the first time, are presented by PennWell Corporation, organisers of the global POWER-GEN conferences and exhibitions, considered the premier global events for the energy sector.

This year will see the US Deputy Secretary of Energy, Daniel Poneman, travelling to SA to address the event and meet media and stakeholders. He will also meet the South African Minister of Energy in Pretoria during his visit to the country.

In addition, over 270 experts from across Africa and abroad will unpack key issues at POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa. Included on the agenda are keynotes by Ompi Aphane, Deputy Director General: Policy, Planning and Clean Energy in the Department of Energy of the Republic of South Africa, Robert Kahimise, Chief Executive Officer of Erongo RED of Namibia; and Dr. Steve J. Lennon, Group Executive, Sustainability at Eskom Group Holdings, as well as special sessions such as a case study on rural electrification in Ghana and a session on renewable energy grid integration.

The African version of POWER-GEN has grown in stature since its inception, and will this year feature around 110 leading regional and international exhibitors showcasing the latest innovative designs and technologies for power generation and distribution.

Among the highlights of the conference will be a joint plenary panel discussion on energy security in Africa, with a distinguished panel including Engr. Beks Dagogo-Jack Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Presidential Task Force on Power (PTFP), and a member of the Presidential Action Committee on Power (PACP); Cornelis van der Waal, Frost & Sullivan business unit leader; Sanjith Mungroo, Head of Business Development SA at GDF Suez; Kribs Govender, General Manager Low Carbon Electricity in Sasol New Energy; Dr. Lawrence Jones, Vice President, Utility Innovations & Infrastructure Resilience at Alstom Grid Inc in the US; Shamal Sivasanker, Consulting Leader at Deloitte South Africa; and Dr Wolsey Barnard, Deputy Director General: Energy Programmes & Projects at the South African Department of Energy.
