Outsourcing your IT

The decision to bring a third party on board to manage and support your IT environment can reap numerous benefits for the organisation. If done correctly.

What can you do to mitigate some of the risks and challenges? Managed service providers (MSPs) operate on a pro-active approach, whereas traditional outsourcing providers have a break-fix model that depends on the client reporting a problem that needs to be fixed.

Knowing what you are outsourcing can also lead to a smooth transition and you can make the process easier by asking yourself these four questions.

1) What does our infrastructure landscape look like today?

Knowing how many computers, servers, switches, printers, etc. you have will make it easier to understand your starting point and where you need to go.

2) What are the support procedures?

What are your current support procedures and who do you contact if something goes wrong with your IT? Is your bookkeeper doubling up as the resident IT expert, and how will your chosen IT partner’s support procedure affect current operations?

3) What will our needs be in the future?

With everything moving online and various cloud services available, as well as users bringing their own devices, your organisation needs to be able to support these new services and the “always-on” ability these online services provide.

4) Can our current systems support that change?

Your resident bookkeeper / IT guy may not have the expertise to answer this question, and it will also help to narrow down what skills and expertise your chosen IT partner needs in order to provide adequate support to your organisation.

“MSP providers can help you with answering these questions,” says Heinrich Kleinschmidt, MD of Southern Star Computers, a local MSP provider. “And with these answers they will be able to give you a managed services contract designed to fit your organisation’s needs and add value to your business.”
