CT water consumption up by 28-million litres

The City of Cape Town has noted a week-on-week increase in residents’ water consumption, with 28-million more litres being used in the past week. This has pushed Cape Town’s average overall water consumption up to 583-million litres per day.

“We are not yet in a position where we can safely relax our water savings efforts,” the City said, referring to the recent increase in the Cape’s dam level average to 61.8%.

Although the city’s water consumption has risen with the dam levels, the city is still keeping within the allocated 650-million litres per day. Water restrictions will remain in place to help the dams recover.

Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC, Anton Bredell, said the Gouritz River catchment area remains an area of concern.

“This is the area feeding large parts of the Karoo. While some regions, including Beaufort West, have received good rains in their catchment areas, others have not yet seen the relief they need,” said Bredell. “A source of concern remains the agriculture sector in large parts of the province where the ongoing drought, which has been prevalent for more than four years, remains in effect.”

Bredell said his department will continue to monitor the water situation across the Western Cape.
