Kalk Bay school awarded Green Flag

Kalk Bay’s own St James RC Primary School has been awarded Eco-School status and received a Green Flag as a symbol of international acknowledgement of its achievements in environmental excellence.

At the assembly in celebration of the momentous achievement, local artist and yoga instructor Sanae Sawada was commended for her contribution to the health and wellness activities at the school as well as her efforts in recycling for the past five years. Sanae creates art pieces involving folded-paper butterflies, and uses only recycled paper to make them.

Sanae also commemorated three years of teaching at Kleinberg Primary in Ocean View. She has contributed a great deal to both schools with regards to both health and wellness, as well as bringing awareness of sustainable habits.

St James RC Primary School has placed great focus over the past five years on increasing its eco-friendly awareness and status and was ecstatic to finally be recognised for its efforts. It is part of the WESSA Eco  Schools project which supports environmental learning in classrooms. The programme exists in 67 countries around the world and has been active in South Africa since 2003.

The programme encourages schools to follow seven steps towards becoming more eco-friendly in order to achieve a Green Flag.

“Congratulations to the school on achieving our International Flag and certificate for being a part of the Eco School’s Project. Thank you to the staff for their hard work under the leadership and guidance of Mr. Jenkins,” said the school in an announcement on Facebook.
