Kommetjie tented camp closes due to safety concerns

A popular camping spot at Kommetjieโ€™s Slangkop has reportedly been closed following what is being referred to as an โ€œincidentโ€ that raised safety concerns.

Speaking to CapeTalk, a local tour guide confirmed that his booking for a group of clients in early February was cancelled by SANParks following an incident that took place at the site last week.

No information is currently available regarding the details surrounding the incident, but it is clear that it concerned management enough that they decided to close the site altogether as they look into ways to increase safety at the location.

This is not the first time a popular camping spot has closed due to safety concerns. Orange Kloof Tented Camp also closed in 2019 following a series of robberies that took place in the area.

To date, SANParks has provided no official comment regarding the closure and did not even provide the tour guide with information as to why his booking was cancelled.

Out of the four camps located along the Hoerikwaggo Trail that connects Cape Point and Table Mountain, only one camp is still operating.

Itโ€™s no secret that Cape Townโ€™s tourism industry has been thrown into chaos due to crime and safety concerns. Going ahead, many tourism-focused offerings will need to up their safety regulations and this includes camping sites and hiking trails.

Cape Town Etc made efforts to contact SANParks for comment regarding the safety issues but no response was received at theย time of publishing.
