Transnet to launch container train to reduce road traffic

South African freight rail and port company,  Transnet announced it is switching its container transport strategy from road to rail in a bid to ease traffic congestion and improve efficiency at the Cape Town container terminal at the harbour, on Saturday, February 6.

The transporter said it successfully tested a reefer container train, which ran from the Belcon Inland Terminal, in Bellville, to Transnet’s Cape Town Container Terminal.

Transnet said the initiative brings much-needed relief on the roads and conveys goods to the ports more efficiently while lowering the cost of doing business.

“The collaboration between two Transnet operating divisions – port terminals and freight rail – supports the company’s strategy for a modal shift from road to rail, and introduces much-needed improvements in the entire supply chain,” said Transnet spokesperson, Ayanda Shezi in a statement.
