WC Department of Agriculture bags a gold award for climate change

The Western Cape has won yet another accolade for its commitments to sustainability. The province’s Department of Agriculture was recently presented the prestigious Gold Award in the category ‘Climate Change’ for the top-rated radio series, Die Kwik Styg, at the virtual 2020 Ecologic Awards Ceremony.

The Ecologic Awards were established in 2011 with the goal of acknowledging individuals, organizations, and communities that positively contribute towards a sustainable world. They have since grown and have become one of South Africa’s most reported events in TV, radio, print media, and online coverage.

Winning series Die Kwik Styg provided an audio “painting” of various aspects of climate change. The focus was to bring together the pieces of the climate change puzzle. The platform provided the listener with information in bite-size information packs to instill a better understanding of climate change. Die Kwik Styg ran for one hundred and four programs with the last program aired on April 3, 2020.

Due to COVID-19, a virtual award ceremony for the 2020 Ecologic Awards was held on Tuesday night [September 22]. Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer said that climate change is one of his priorities and he is extremely proud of Chief Director of Research and Technology Development, Dr Ilse Trautmann and her team for creating the series.

He went on to say: “Creating awareness among South Africans of the challenges and opportunities of climate change is critical in our campaign to develop innovative solutions to the challenge it presents. Die Kwik Styg provided the perfect platform for the Western Cape to contribute to the building of a climate-resilient South Africa.”

Trautmann added: “Each program stated the facts regarding climate change and then offered innovative and sustainable solutions. A positive message of all is not doom and gloom, and we can strive towards a sustainable and better future, was the closing of every program.”
