Winelands Airport hopes to alleviate congestion at Cape Town International

The new Cape Winelands Airport now owned by investor Rob Hersovย is well underway to becoming an alternative commercial airport that will be direct competition for the Cape Town International Airport (CTIA).

The Cape Winelands Airportโ€™s finance and operations manager, Mark Wilkinson toldย MyBroadbandย they will resurface the existing runways and build more hangars and facilities fit for purpose for the operators within the general aviation industry.

โ€œGeneral aviation currently uses up valuable space and resources at the Cape Town International Airport,โ€ said Wilkinson. He added that by the time they could operate scheduled traffic at the Cape Winelands Airport, CTIA will be bursting at its seams and the new airport will alleviate the congestion of air traffic in Cape Town.

They hope to operate scheduled traffic at the Cape Winelands Airport while the upgrades are in progress.

The Cape Winelands Airport is situated 14 kilometers northeast of Durbanville and is 150 hectares large. It features four runways, but only two were currently in use for aviation training and private aircraft.
