Western Cape Government launches Sports Precinct at Conradie Park

On 28 November 2024, Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, and Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, launched a new sports precinct at the Conradie Park social housing development in Pinelands, Cape Town, marking another significant step in the Western Cape Governmentโ€™s commitment to building inclusive and thriving communities.

The sports precinct forms part of the Conradie Park Better Living Model, a transformative development, earmarked to deliver over 3 500 residential units, aimed addressing spatial inequality, creating opportunities, and improving quality of life for residents.

The development has created over 2 000 job opportunities and more than 90 economic opportunities for Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises. In addition to this, the project is being leveraged to upskill our workforce with more than 180 learnership and graduate intakes.

Once an underutilised piece of land, Conradie Park has been reimagined into a vibrant, mixed-use community. It combines affordable housing with state-of-the-art schools, healthcare facilities, retail spaces, and parks; providing residents with the chance to live, work, learn, and play in one interconnected space.

Speaking at the launch, Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, highlighted the importance of this development, “Conradie Park is not just about buildings; it is about people. This sports precinct is a space where young people can dream big, where communities can come together, and where barriers can be broken down. It symbolises hope, opportunity, and progress for our communities.”

Mark Schรถnrock, Development Executive at Concor, said at the event, โ€œConcor is extremely excited to launch the Sports Precinct at Conradie Park. Sport has always been a powerful force for unity, transcending boundaries and strengthening communities, essentially bridging people together. It instills teamwork, strategic thinking and essential life skills. Central to Conradie Park, our Sports Precinct and school sites are designed to create a space where everyone can come together, play and enjoy a vibrant and safe community spirit.โ€

Premier Winde added, โ€œWith Conradie Park we are building for the future. If we are to become a future-fit province that addresses the challenges that come with a fast-growing population, we need to reimagine what our cities and towns will look like in the next several years. I applaud all the role players who have worked tirelessly to bring this awe-inspiring development to life. This is what is possible when we plan properly for the future.โ€

The new sports precinct will provide the surrounding community with much-needed recreational space, further enhancing this Better Living Modelโ€™s role as a hub for growth and connecting communities to each other and to opportunities.

Minister Simmers added, “Infrastructure is not just about bricks and mortar โ€“ itโ€™s about building dignity, creating opportunity, and giving every person a fair chance to succeed. Developments like Conradie Park show what is possible when government, private partners, and communities work together.”

The Western Cape Government remains committed to driving innovative infrastructure projects that improve lives and create opportunities. The Conradie Park development continues to set a benchmark for integrated and inclusive urban living in South Africa.
