Torque Africa Drilling, a well-known specialist driller, recently carried out a drilling operation to drill vertically down into an old mine shaft to dispose of acid water for the Department of Water and Sanitation. This was done using two ELGi 1100 cfm compressors arranged in tandem to drill 1,148m vertically down into the mine shaft. The site of this super deep borehole is in the Eastern Basin acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment plant, in Springs, Gauteng.
“So far this is the deepest confirmed hole I have ever seen – or other drilling companies have ever made, in this kind of rock formation in the country,” said Torque Africa Drilling’s Nardus Bezuidenhout.
Bezuidenhout said he has been in the drilling industry for almost twenty years and it is not easy to go even beyond 300m deep in this rock formation. “Although the original plan called for a vertical hole of 700m, a new target of 1,200m was set, and the target was acquired at 1,148m with the ELGi compressor.”
