Want To Tip But Don’t Carry Cash? Pick n Pay Rolls Out Its Appreciation Voucher Nationwide

A national rollout for the solution follows the success of a franchise store’s food stamp initiative for car guards

As South Africans increasingly move towards cashless payments, Pick n Pay has launched an Appreciation Voucher initiative nationwide, giving customers another way to tip or thank people who provide everyday services when they don’t have cash on hand.

Available in R5, R10 and R20 denominations, the vouchers can be purchased at till points at Pick n Pay stores nationwide and given to anyone as a token of appreciation. Recipients can redeem them for groceries at any Pick n Pay store.

In a country where many people rely on informal work and tips to earn an income, the initiative offers a practical alternative. While cashless payments are convenient for consumers, they can create challenges when people want to tip but no longer carry cash, and the recipient cannot accept digital payments, such as QR code payments.

The national rollout was inspired by an initiative at Pick n Pay Steenberg Village in Cape Town, where the franchised store introduced R5 food stamps that customers could purchase and give to car guards. The idea offered a simple solution to a familiar dilemma: customers wanted to show appreciation but often had no cash. Car guards at the centre could collect the stamps and redeem them for groceries when needed.

Following its success and positive feedback, Pick n Pay developed a broader Appreciation Voucher initiative to extend the concept nationwide, allowing more customers and recipients to benefit.

Appreciation Vouchers give customers another way to say thank you when they don’t have cash on hand. For customers who want to recognise the people who help them throughout the day, the voucher offers a practical alternative to cash – and another way to say thank you.

Customers can purchase multiple vouchers in one transaction. The vouchers are valid for three years and can be redeemed for groceries at any Pick n Pay store nationwide.

Each voucher must be redeemed in full in a single transaction, with the shopping basket value equal to or greater than the voucher amount. No change is given, and vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash. Lost vouchers cannot be reprinted, so customers should keep them safe.
