Artworks from the collection of the esteemed late gallerist, Andrew da Conceicao on auction

A selection of artworks from the estate of the late Andrew da Conceicao, is currently on offer in the auction, IN PRIVATE: Artworks from the Estate Late Andrew da Conceica, presented by Aspire Art and closing on Tuesday, 5 December 2023.

A highly esteemed figure in the South African art community, Andrew was a founding director of Stevenson gallery in 2003. He left an indelible mark on the industry and was widely loved, respected and celebrated for his warmth, generosity, and signature big smile and warm hugs.

Dedicated to elevating the status of African artists in his work at Stevenson Andrew’s influence extended to identifying and nurturing young artists. He held a genuine interest in emerging talents and initiatives and actively followed the progress of numerous young artists, providing unwavering support and ensuring they felt valued. His approach to his work was marked by deep care and dedication, coupled with a profound reverence for artists’ skill, imagination, and craftsmanship. Beyond his artistic endeavours, Andrew’s compassion reached those in need through initiatives such as the Stevenson Social Fund committee, supporting organisations like the Pride Shelter Trust.

Featured in this exclusive collection are artists with significant ties to Stevenson. Notable pieces include Zander Blom’s Garage-ism Starter Pack, as well as two silver gelatin prints by renowned South African documentary photographer David Goldblatt, who exhibited with Stevenson in the early 2000s.

The auction also presents a diverse array of largely South African artists, both emerging and established, identified and collected by Andrew. Highlights include large-scale paintings by Marlise Keith and Mark Kannemeyer, a striking pencil portrait by Hentie van der Merwe, fabric works by Lawrence Lemaoana and Piere le Riche, and an intricate ink and watercolor on paper by Lyndi Sales.

The intimate auction, brings 33 artworks, collected in private, to a broader audience, to celebrate and honour the legacy of a gallerist who left an enduring mark on the South African art scene.

The auction will run until Tuesday, 5 December with lots closing from 6pm. Works are currently on view at Aspire Art in Cape Town, 37A Somerset Road, De Waterkant, open Mon-Fri from 8.30-4.30. For additional information regarding the works, kindly contact Micaela Wentzel, at micaela@aspireart.net
