Leveraging Business Events for Growth, Jobs and Market Access

Leveraging Business Events for Growth, Jobs and Market Access

The Western Cape Business Events Forecast Forum, hosted by the Cape Town & Western Cape Convention Bureau, a unit of Wesgro, reinforced a decisive shift in how business events are positioned within the province’s economic framework. Convened in partnership with the Society of Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) and the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI), the forum moved beyond trend analysis to focus on execution, accountability and measurable impact.

Central to the discussion was Wesgro’s integrated mandate as an economic development agency and its alignment with the Western Cape Government’s Growth for Jobs (G4J) Strategy. Business events were positioned not as standalone tourism activity, but as strategic economic infrastructure that supports trade expansion, investment attraction, job creation and sector competitiveness.

Emerging markets featured prominently as a growth priority. Africa, Asia, India, the Middle East and ASEAN were framed as high-potential markets closely aligned to the province’s priority sectors, including energy, health, agriculture, technology and advanced manufacturing. In Africa in particular, business events are increasingly driven by commercial and trade imperatives rather than traditional association demand, requiring sustained in-market engagement, sector fluency and long-term relationship building.

The forum also highlighted the industry’s need to evolve its approach to impact and legacy. While these concepts are now embedded in sector language, Wesgro emphasised that future credibility will depend on the ability to demonstrate tangible economic outcomes. Jobs supported, skills transferred, local procurement enabled and investment facilitated must be measured, tracked and communicated using language that resonates with government and economic planners.

Data emerged as both a challenge and an opportunity. Under-reporting of the true economic value of business events continues to limit the sector’s influence within policy and funding structures. Destinations that can standardise metrics, strengthen reporting and clearly articulate return on investment will be best positioned to secure long-term support.

Wesgro Strategic Outcomes (FY26–FY30)

Aligned to the Western Cape Growth for Jobs (G4J) Strategy:

  • 800,000 – 1 million new international tourist arrivals, supporting demand growth and job creation

  • 161 business event bids secured, with an estimated economic value of R4.5 billion

  • 250 ship calls by 2030, strengthening cruise tourism and coastal economic activity

  • 10 new air routes, improving connectivity and market access

  • 3 international tourism marketing campaigns, driving global destination awareness

  • 12,500 international trade engagements, supporting exports, investment and sector growth

Key Strategic Actions for the Sector

  • Position business events as long-term economic assets aligned to provincial growth priorities

  • Focus emerging market strategies on trade, sector development and investment enablement

  • Move from narrative-led impact to evidence-based legacy reporting

  • Invest in data, measurement and shared economic language across the value chain

  • Collaborate closely with Wesgro to leverage events as platforms for air access, cruise growth and trade expansion

The forum concluded with a clear message: business events are a powerful lever for inclusive economic growth. Destinations and stakeholders that align strategy, data and delivery will define the Western Cape’s competitive advantage in the years ahead.
