With the City of Cape Townโs level 3Bย waterย restrictions coming in to force on 1 February 2017,ย FEDHASA, the Federatedย Hospitalityย Association of South Africa has called on its members to optimiseย waterresource management across the industry.
Dam levels dropped to around 39.2% by the end of January; the City has warned that it is not viable to use the last 10% ofย waterย in the dams and forecast for rain is dismal.ย The average consumption ofย waterย in Cape Town is approximatelyย 80 million litresย over the collective per dayย water-savingย target of 800 million litres.
โIt is not just critical thatย tourismย andย hospitalityย establishments adhere to the letter of the currentย waterย restrictions,โ saysย FEDHASAย CEO,ย Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, โWe also face the challenges of educating guests and visitors and bringing them on board with the countryโsย water-savingย efforts in this time of severe drought.โ
FEDHASAย keeps its members abreast of currentย waterย shortage situations as well as promotes best practices inย waterย resource management on an on-going basis.
Tsogo Sun Hotels, for example, place notices in bathrooms that educate guests onย waterย restrictions as well as theirย water-savingย linen and towel replacement schedule. Under this program bed linen is only changed on every third day of each guestโs stay, if a change is not requested sooner, and towels that are hung up are not changed each day, unless upon request. In addition, Tsogo Sun Hotels have installedย waterย meters and shower heads with โrestricted flowโ which assist greatly with the task of limitingย waterย usage.
A number of Cape Townโs top establishments employ environmental management techniques of international standard. ย The V&A Waterfront introducedย water-savingย initiatives almost a decade ago that spokesperson Enid Vickers says save about 9000 kilolitres ofย waterย per building per month.ย
The stringent level 3Bย waterย restrictions, which only allow the use of municipalย waterย for irrigation (using a bucket or watering can), and just on Tuesdays and Saturdays, for merely one hour a day either beforeย 09h00ย or afterย 18h00, are a strong motivator for hotels, guesthouses and B&Bโs to devise greyย waterย systems to maintain the attractiveness of their properties.
FEDHASAย member, The Townhouse Hotel has so far successfully motivated its guests to participate in their emergency greyย waterย system. The hotel educates guests about the current drought conditions and inspires responsibleย tourismย by providing buckets in bathrooms.ย Guests have been encouraged to take short showers with buckets placed in the stalls.ย These are routinely collected and used toย waterย the hotel gardens and trees.ย
โEnvironmental management best practices, innovations and the constant promotion and facilitation of responsibleย tourismย at establishment level is vital,โ commentsย Tshifhiwa, โCurrentย waterย shortages and the issues of how to include our guests in the countryโsย water-savingย efforts are high on the agenda for the upcomingย FEDHASAย meeting onย 10 February.ย However, this drought is not some kind of โonce-offโ occasion.ย As the effects of climate change intensify, and because South Africa has always been aย water-stressed region, we encourage our members to make long-term sustainability a key focus of their operations.ย Properย waterย management includesย waterย harvesting,ย waterrecycling and naturalย waterย purifying; as well asย waterย monitoring and audits; and, constantย water-savingย practices from the basic usage by guests to implementingย water-efficient systems that range from the air-conditioning to kitchen, and from the bathroom to the food garden.โ
