Transnet issues a tender for the running of its liquid bulk terminal at the Port of Cape Town

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a tender for the running of its liquid bulk terminal at the Port of Cape Town.

The state-owned transport group said the winner of the 25-year concession will acquire, operate, maintain, refurbish, and/or construct and transfer a liquid bulk terminal at the portโ€™s liquid bulk precinct.

News that TNPA has called for interested parties to bid for the running of its liquid bulk operations came as the ports of Cape Town and Durban experienced heavy congestion over the past year.

This has resulted in calls by the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town to speed up Transnetโ€™s pledge to increase the role of the private sector in the running of the Port of Cape Town.

TNPA has already awarded International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), based in the Philippines, a 25-year contract to run operations at Durban Container Terminal Pier 2. This terminal handles 72% of the Port of Durbanโ€™s throughput and 46% of South Africaโ€™s port traffic.

TNPA is also finalising precinct plans for the Culemborg Intermodal Logistics Precinct Development in the Port of Cape Town, which is also expected to alleviate congestion. Once the planning is done,ย  a request for proposals will be made during the 2024/25 financial year.

Those wanting to know more about the liquid bulk concession can attend a briefing on 30 April 2024, at 12pm, at the Port of Cape Town, 10th-floor boardroom, TNPA House, 34 South Arm Road, Waterfront.

Those looking for more information and wishing to attend the briefing can contact Nonceba Magazi-Qelile at Nonceba.Magazi-Qelile@transnet.net.

The closing date is 15 July 2024.
