Fuel prices tumble, bringing welcome relief at the pumps

Motorists and businesses will enjoy welcome relief this month as fuel prices drop across the board. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has confirmed decreases in petrol, diesel, illuminating paraffin and LPG, effective from 00h01 on Wednesday, 3 September 2025 (midnight Tuesday, 2 September 2025).

Lebo Ramolahloane, National Vice Chairperson of the South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), says the adjustment is well-timed.

“Households and businesses have been under immense strain from months of volatility. This decrease brings real relief. Diesel’s sharp drop is especially positive for transport, agriculture, and logistics –  sectors that carry the economy and directly impact consumer costs,” says Ramolahloane.

Fuel Price Adjustments – Effective 3 September 2025

Petrol – Retail price

  •   93 ULP & LRP: 4.00 c/litre decrease
  •  95 ULP & LRP: 4.00 c/litre decrease

Diesel – Wholesale price

  • 0.05% Sulphur: 56.00 c/litre decrease
  • 0.005% Sulphur: 57.00 c/litre decrease

Illuminating Paraffin

  • Wholesale: 37.00 c/litre decrease
  • SMNRP: 49.00 c/litre decrease

LPG

  • Maximum Retail Price: 132.00 c/kg decrease

Lower fuel prices are expected to provide some short-term relief for households and the broader economy, particularly at a time when inflationary pressures are building. July’s inflation reached 3.5% – the highest level in ten months – with food costs identified as the main driver. Rising prices for essentials such as meat and vegetables continue to weigh heavily on consumers.

While the latest decrease in fuel will help to ease some of this strain, analysts caution that the relief may be temporary. Global geopolitical risks and volatile international markets remain significant factors that could quickly reverse the current downward trend.

SAPRA will continue to track developments closely to keep motorists and businesses informed.”
