Yanmar – Your partner for a sustainable future

The South African commercial fishing sector more often than not, also has some dilemmas of its own whether it be policies, socio-economic factors or a combination of everything in the current situations that has caused quite a stir as of late. The major concern in the fisheries sector is the need to maintain a delicate balance between the requirements for increased production, which contribute to guaranteed food security, and the need to conserve and protect the resources for long-term economical and natural sustainability.

Illegal- and overfishing in certain regions have an effect on the local fishing companies as they now have less available resources at their disposal. Smaller operations such as sustenance and generational fishermen are even more negatively affected as they do not have the means to go further and deeper at sea in search of fish that used to be abundant in the past. Poaching has also become a big problem as individuals revert to that to support their livelihood. further depleting the stocks with some species currently deemed as depleted beyond point of recovery.

Be this as it may, being a part of the industry, an OEM like us have a responsibility to minimise any of the controllable factors going forward.

With the ever-increasing focus on the environmental challenges we face, the need to move with the changes have become an essential part of our product evolution. Gone are the days of ignorance and a โ€œweโ€™ll look at it in 5 yearsโ€™ timeโ€ mentality that many in other industries have had, as much more stringent emission regulations have been implemented in many regions around the world.

Since YANMAR’s founding more than 100 years ago, the company has been driven by a pioneering spirit for world-leading technology and continues to be a core focus.

Diesel engine exhaust emission control systems have become a standard requirement in many regions worldwide as the rest of the globe is sure to follow suit eventually with some regions currently not having any form of exhaust emission regulation at all.

Yanmarโ€™s IMO Tier 3 certified high-speed 6-cylinder marine engine and SCR:

IMO Tier III* requires ships built from 2016 onwards in designated emission control areas (ECAs) to have an 80% NOx reduction from Tier I levels. By 2020, sulphur content of less than 0.5% will be required for all ships as well. Time and time again, YANMAR technology has proven itself to be reliable in a wide range of commercial marine engines. In addition to this, to stay ahead of the game we are continually improving on new technology that meets tightening emissions regulations. In addition to providing our customers with the products they need, we also improve โ€Life Cycle Value” of our products. YANMAR delivers optimized solutions that support longer engine and ship life.
