The #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2023, hosted in Cape Town from 7 โ 8 August, will gather policy-makers, business leaders, design professionals and civil society to address the pressing challenge of scaling up circular solutions in South Africa.
Anย initiative of theย Missionย Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlandsย inย Southย Africaย (#cocreateSANL),ย theย annualย festivalย celebrates and examines the power ofย designย to tackle current socio-economic and environmental challenges withinย aย localย context.ย Theย festivalย is organisedย inย collaborationย with theย Craft andย Designย Institute (CDI), andย inย 2023 has been curatedย inย partnership with the City of Cape Town,ย GreenCapeย andย Circularย Southย Africaย (CSA). This yearโsย festivalย will be hosted over two days at theย Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika, based at the University of Cape Town.
Theย Festivalย is the culminationย of a 2023 event series exploring the concept ofย circularityย inย Southย Africaย โ and offers a deep diveย intoย localย challenges, successes and opportunities for aย circularย economy.
โThe aim of #cocreateDESIGNย FESTIVALย 2023 is to facilitate conversations that can bolster collaboration, enhanceย innovation, and creative thinking, while breaking down professional silos. We need to defuse the ‘ticking time bomb’ of environmental damage. Theย Festivalย will help us explore how we can we move away from the current linearย economyย models that donโt take care of natural resources and createย incredible amounts of waste.
This year we look forward toย discussing, learning, and sparking new ideas that will help shapeย circularity withinย aย localย context,โ says Hรฉlรจne Rekkers, Consul General of the Netherlandsย inย Cape Town.
Erica Elk, Group CEO of the CDI, adds that,ย โCreating a future with sustainability at the centre of how we work and live remainsย one of the biggest challenges of our time โ through these dialogues we aim to create awareness and will explore solutions.โ
โWhat we face is fundamentally aย designย challenge,ย one that encompasses how weย designย policy, and how weย designย systems, products and business practices. The first step to acting is knowing โ that’s a really important goal of these gatherings โ alongside cross-sectoral and cross-functional engagement because we need people coming together across complex value chains to workย onย meaningful solutions. Weโve seen how this is possible throughย initiatives like the Plastics Pact, but how can we foster this collaborative mindset further? And, of course, citizens have power. We need to foster a growing movement of people consuming differently. Weย invite engagement from across all sectors of society.โ
The morning sessionsย onย each day are free to attend but seating is limited, and booking is essential forย in-venue attendance. For those that cannot attendย inย person, live stream links will be shared. Theย Festivalย has a series of smaller satellite sessions, and the outcomes of these strategic meetings will be shared via publicationย laterย inย 2023.
Theย Festivalย follows two Creative Exchange eventsย onย circularity, which have laid the foundationย for this yearโsย festival. (See recordings of theย Juneย andย Julyevents). Theย festivalprogramme will coverย circularityย inย theย Southย African context broadly, and the fashionย and tourism sectors as focal areas this year.
This yearโsย festivalย continues the thread of sustainabilityย โย inย 2022 theย festivalย broughtย into focus how we canย designย better processes, systems and products that can lead to a more water secure future. An outcome of this is a wonderful booklet which showcases some award-winning projectsย inย water-sensitiveย design, and some best practice outcomes from a diversity ofย designers who have done remarkable work. The 2023ย Festivalย focus is timely, with the recent launch of a newย Circularย Economyย Demonstrationย Fund, supported by the Department of Science andย Innovationย (DSI) and implemented by the Council for Scientific andย Industrial Research (CSIR). Theย circularย economyย is an important source ofย inclusive economic growth, and the 2019 White Paperย onย Science,ย Technology andย Innovationย (STI) wasย one of the firstย Southย African policy documents to identify its long-term potential.ย Inย addition, aย research report releasedย by theย International Labour Organisationย indicates that theย transitionย to aย circularย economyย could lead to the creationย of millions of new jobsย inย the Globalย South.
