Steyn City gas infrastructure

DURING this cold winter’s continuous load shedding the fortunate residence of Steyn City had continuous hot water, hot cooked meals and warm gas heating, all due to gas as their primary energy source. 

At the same time as the roads and utilities infrastructure, gas pipes were laid beside the other services as the preferred energy source to ensure that all residence of Steyn City will be assured of the most reliable energy source during this difficult electrical supply period in South Africa.

Many of the residence have since then also jumped to the opportunity to install gas powered generators at their houses, eliminating any loss of power for any of their appliances or networks. 

GPS – Gas Piping Services, have, since the start of this development, added value as consultants as well as gas infrastructure developers to ensure that the residence have a continuous supply of gas. This required large storage of LP Gas which we have installed in a central service yard that supplies more than a month of gas supply therefore preventing any potential downtime. As an added advantage the gas storage was equipped with telemetry the gives the gas supplier and Steyn City property managers regular gas level updates.

With gas already part of the backbone of energy supply to all residents, the clubhouse and restaurants have tapped into this supply network.

GPS have during 2021 completed the gas infrastructure for the 296 newly launched units of Steyn City – City Centre. Each unit is equipped with top of range gas cooker and the best gas geyser available is South Africa. 

We have recently been appointed as the gas infrastructure contractor for the other 488 units of the Steyn City – City centre and the shopping complex.

In an attempt by property developers to get access to cleaner and reliable energy sources, many have turned their focus to gas. Both LP Gas and Natural gas gives all developments the quickest access to energy. This access to gas also reduces the dependence on municipal or Eskom power by more than 60%, giving the developer quicker approval for his projects. A large part of a developer’s approval process is called bulk contributions. This financial contribution to the local authority is based on the kVA requirement for each unit being built. With gas reducing this demand it also reduces the bulk contribution due to the local authority.

To use gas rather that Eskom produced power, reduces the carbon footprint from 100+ to only 1 using natural gas and to only 3 using LP Gas. A vast contribution to South Africa’s target for 2030. 

Gas, now an important future for South Africa, allows many developers to produce cost effective electricity at their developments and sell excess back to Eskom or local authority. The domestic energy profile suits gas better than other energy sources as the storage is simple and cheap.
