South Africa’s logistics challenges have become one of the country’s biggest constraints on economic growth. Congested ports, rail bottlenecks, infrastructure limitations and supply chain disruptions continue to affect exporters, manufacturers, retailers and consumers alike. Le Roux believes the full value of these capabilities will only be realised if they are supported by appropriate governance and collaboration. “Optimising an entire logistics ecosystem requires organisations to share information and work from trusted data,” he says. “That means governance frameworks will need to evolve alongside the technology. AI can optimise individual organisations, but its greatest value will come when it helps optimise entire industries.”

Modern logistics networks involve transport operators, freight forwarders, warehouse operators, shipping lines, manufacturers, retailers and regulators, each with access to only part of the overall picture.

However, Le Roux cautions that successful AI adoption still depends on getting the digital foundations right.
“AI is only as good as the information it receives,” he says. “Before organisations focus on sophisticated AI initiatives, they need trusted operational data, integrated systems and clear visibility across their business.
