USA adds South Africa on to their ‘ Do not travel’ list

South Africa’s tourism industry has been handed another devastating blow after the Biden administration added South Africa onto a list that advises US citizens not to travel to, along with eight additional countries, reports IOL

This comes after concerns regarding the spread of the coronavirus; in particular, the Delta variant, which has brought about the third wave and has wreaked havoc in many parts of SA.

“This week, the following Travel Advisories have been assessed and reissued with updates, raised to a Level 4 – Do Not Travel,” the State Department said in a media note. “Bhutan, Botswana, Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone [and] South Africa,” the State Department announced on Tuesday.

Countries such as Papua New Guinea remain at a Level 4 – “Do Not Travel” classification. However, Belgium, Croatia, Sri Lanka and Estonia have been lowered to a Level 3 classification by the State Department.

At the start of the year, South African citizens were barred from crossing the majority of the world’s borders. However, March seemed to bring renewed hope for travel enthusiasts as many destinations reopened to South Africans.
