No alcohol sales on Heritage Day, says Cele

Those excited about stocking up on alcohol on Heritage Day [Thursday, September 24] are in for a rude awakening โ€“ no off-site sale of alcohol will be permitted, as this falls in line with the regulations of lockdown level 1. You will, however, be allowed to consume liquor on-site in pubs, bars, taverns and hospitality venues.

This was announced by Police Minister Bheki Cele during a media briefing on Tuesday, September 22. He also added that restaurants who offer patrons โ€œtakeaway beersโ€ and such will be punished, as this remains illegal.

โ€œPolice will continue to enforce the curfew, which starts from midnight until 4am. The sale of liquor is permitted from 9am to 5pm during the week. No alcohol can be sold for off-site consumption over the weekend or during public holidays,โ€ he said. โ€œAlcohol can be sold and consumed at licensed premises only, but not before 9:00 and not after midnight. Equally, alcohol cannot be sold as takeaways, it must be consumed on the premises where it was bought. Itโ€™s that simple.โ€

Cele also reminded the public to remember that while social gathering such as concerts and live performances are now permitted, nightclubs are still to remain shut. He also urged South Africans to remain aware of their neighbours during the pandemic, and be considerate of noise levels.

โ€œThere are many complaints received of noisy and disruptive behavior at peopleโ€™s homes. This virus is still very much with us and despite lifting of restrictions, people need to take responsibility for their own lives and that of their loved ones.โ€
