Power update: System is ‘extremely vulnerable’

A statement released by Eskom early this morning said that load shedding is not planned for this week but might be implemented if an “unexpected shift in the system” occurred.

“The system continues to remain extremely constrained and vulnerable, with generating (plants) performing at very low levels of reliability. As unplanned breakdowns remain marginally below 9500MW at 06:00, there is no load shedding expected today, but the probability of load shedding remains if there is any unexpected shift in the system,” the statement read.

Eskom unexpectedly implemented stage 2 load shedding last week Thursday after they lost an additional 3 generation units and had to use emergency reserves to meet demands during the day.
