Second rockfall at Franschhoek Pass

Another rockfall took place on Franschhoek Pass today following heavy rains, and is the second one to happen on the pass in just two weeks.

Since the first rockfall on June 22 2019, the pass has remained closed until further notice. Mark Thackwray (28), who was taking Franschhoek Pass on his way to Struisbaas, was caught in the rockslide where he and the driver narrowly escaped with their lives.

While driving on the pass, a boulder hit the front of Thackwray’s car. He and the driver immediately evacuated the vehicle, just in time – soon after they exited the car, another massive rock fell onto it, hitting the back door on the passenger side.
