Shark cage diving is an adventure all on its own and to make it the best experience possible, the gear your operator supplies is important, from the millimeter thickness of the wetsuit to the equipment used inside the cage.
Even though Cape Town is known for its beautiful waters, the waters can be fairly chilly, and any time spent in the water, cage diving is going to require good insulation. A dive time of between 20 – 30 minutes in 16 degrees Celsius water temperature requires a 5 -7mm wetsuit. This is thicker than the average surfing wetsuit, which is 3mm. These wetsuits usually come with a hoody and booties supplied separately. Hoodies are necessary for cooler waters, as we humans lose most of our heat from our heads. We recommend a ‘second skin’ as an extra layer of insulation worn under the wetsuit and on top of your bathing suit. Note: Operators do not supply second skins – you will need to bring your own.
A standard mask is supplied by the shark cage diving operator. However, if your sizing is unique or you need to wear prescription lenses, you would need to provide this. For the perfect fit, and should you own one, we recommend using your own mask.
Breathing is obviously key although shark cage diving in Gansbaai is relatively easy, and no experience is necessary. The proven method of breathing is breath-hold. Simple! The breath-hold technique is highly recommended not only for it being the most accessible, but also because it adds to the interactive nature of the dive as the crew can communicate with you as to which direction the sharks are located. It is also a great option for those with limitations as you can go at your own pace. Snorkels are typically not recommended unless you have some experience snorkeling and are comfortable using this method.
This leaves the hookah system. The hookah system is popular as it allows guests to breathe underwater using a regulator connected to a cylinder of AIR. Most operators require certification to be able to use this system as one is breathing compressed AIR.
And with any great experience within the 21st century, capturing footage is not standard but essential! The equipment depends on the person but luckily there are a few options for this. Many guests bring amazing DSLR cameras to shoot the amazing wildlife often spotted on these trips. No strobes required in the cage itself also prevents this as there isn’t enough space.
GoPro’s are the most used as they are great for taking videos. However, a cheaper option, like a waterproof pouch for your smartphones works just as well! Most operators sell these pouches as an inexpensive solution
