Connected perimeter security: How smart electric fencing improves intrusion detection

PERIMETER security has traditionally been viewed as the first physical line of defence. Today, however, an effective perimeter needs to do more than create a barrier. It needs to detect potential intrusion, communicate events quickly and provide security teams with the information required to respond effectively.

This is driving a move towards more connected perimeter security, where electric fencing forms part of a broader intrusion detection and security management strategy.

Nemtek Connect and the Nemtek Connect Portal have been developed with this changing environment in mind, extending electric fence monitoring beyond the physical energizer and providing greater visibility across individual sites, multiple zones and geographically dispersed installations.

From deterrence to detection

A monitored electric fence provides an important advantage at the perimeter: an attempted breach can potentially be detected before an intruder reaches buildings, assets or other internal security layers.

When a fence is cut, shorted or interfered with sufficiently to trigger the configured alarm parameters, the energizer can generate an alarm. Connectivity enables this information to be communicated beyond the fence itself, helping security personnel identify that an event has occurred and determine the appropriate response.

Nemtek Connect allows compatible energizers to communicate via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Cellular GSM providing authorised users with remote access to their electric fence systems through the Nemtek Connect mobile app.

Users can monitor fence status, receive alarm information and interact with connected systems without needing to be physically positioned at the energizer.

Centralising perimeter visibility

For larger security environments, the challenge is often not monitoring one fence, but managing multiple zones, sites and systems.

The Nemtek Connect Portal expands the Connect ecosystem through a web-based dashboard designed to provide centralised visibility of connected electric fence installations.

Through the portal, security professionals can view multiple sites and fence zones from a single interface. It provides an overview of connected locations, making the platform particularly relevant to security companies, installers, estates, commercial and industrial operations responsible for geographically dispersed infrastructure.

Role-based access further supports this approach. Owner, advanced, basic and view-level permissions can be assigned according to the responsibilities of individual users, helping organisations control how different people interact with the system.

Information that supports response

The value of connected perimeter security lies not simply in generating more information, but in making that information accessible and useful.

When a perimeter event occurs, visibility into the affected system or zone can assist security teams in assessing the situation and coordinating an appropriate response. System information and analytics can also contribute to ongoing maintenance and management by providing greater insight into fence performance.

For installers and integrators, remote visibility can support a more proactive service model. Instead of the relationship ending once an electric fence has been commissioned, connected technology creates opportunities for ongoing system support, monitoring and maintenance.
