Inspiring the next generation: Port of Richards Bay hosts learners for World Maritime Day

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Port of Richards Bay celebrated World Maritime Day by inviting Grade 10 learners from Dlangezwa High School, Uyengo High School, and Umfolozi TVET College. These students, who are currently studying maritime subjects, were given the opportunity to learn more about the industry and were encouraged to explore the numerous career paths it offers.

The learners spent the day with experienced mariners, who shared insights into their daily duties and how they effectively get their jobs done within the port environment. They also toured one of the Port of Richards tugs, gaining a better understanding of its operations, including a visit to the engine room where they saw the intricate machinery in action. This firsthand exposure helped the participating students understand the diverse roles within the port environment and how different functions work together to keep port operations running smoothly.

“The engagement with these young students is critical in shaping the future of our maritime industry. It’s important for them to see that maritime is more than just a subject in school – it’s an industry full of endless possibilities and exciting career paths,” said Dennis Mqadi, Port Manager at the Port of Richards Bay. “We hope that by giving these young minds this exposure, they will be inspired to pursue careers in this vital sector.”

The day was an inspiring one for the learners, who left with a clearer understanding of the many career possibilities in maritime. The Port of Richards Bay hopes that this initiative will continue to motivate young people to consider careers in the sector, contributing to the growth and sustainability of South Africa’s maritime industry.
