The traffic fine roadshow attracted more than 3 000 road users – and, while they cleared an impressive number of outstanding fines, it was all but wiped out by the more than 50 000 offences recorded by Traffic Officers in the past week.
The roadshow assisted 3Â 004 persons who made representations on 34Â 509 outstanding fines and warrants.
By the conclusion of the nine-day event, 19Â 994 fines and 6Â 663 warrants had been paid, to the value of nearly R7 million.
In the week that the curtain fell on the roadshow, Traffic Officers also recorded 50 774 offences, impounded 209 public transport vehicles and executed 692 warrants of arrest.
They made 50 arrests:
- 29 for driving under the influence of alcohol
- nine for reckless and negligent driving
- 12 for various other transgressions
‘It’s a classic case of two steps forward, three steps back, but we are thankful nonetheless to the motorists who turned out to take care of business. It is my hope that they will use this clean slate to stay on the side of right going forward. However, the number of offences recorded in the past week shows just how much work we still have to do in achieving greater compliance with the rules of the road. While we appear to be developing a culture of accountability in paying fines, we need the same energy from drivers when they are behind the wheel,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman Smith.
Elsewhere, Law Enforcement officers arrested 201 suspects, while their Metro Police counterparts made 60 arrests and issued 3Â 242 fines.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 2 335 incidents over a 72-hour period this past long weekend.
Of these, 828 were medical complaints. The centre also recorded 150 assault cases, 66 domestic violence incidents, 55 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents and 423 noise complaints.
