Nearly 15 000m of pipes replaced in two months

During January and February 2024, 4 129m of water pipes and 10 311m of sewer pipes were replaced City-wide as part of the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive pipe replacement programme. This annual maintenance programme ensures that residents will continue to receive reliable water supply and sewage conveyance services via the different reticulation systems.

In just two months, the City successfully replaced water pipes in Hout Bay, Somerset West, Gordons Bay, Bridgetown, Camps Bay, Newlands, Plumstead, Noordhoek, Simonstown, Loevenstein, Bellville and Goodwood.

Sewer pipes were replaced in Strand, Camps Bay, Lansdowne, Avondale, Lotus River, Muizenberg, Constantia, Bergvliet, Tokai, Southfield, Kuils River, Eerste River, Kraaifontein, Parow North, Mission Grounds.

Various factors are considered when identifying and prioritising pipes for replacement which include a comprehensive condition assessment to identify possible capacity upgrade requirements. Structural failures reported as service requests by the public and logged by depots are also taken into consideration.

‘Cape Town is a rapidly growing city, so the rehabilitation and upgrades to our water and sanitation infrastructure are essential. To meet this objective, the Water and Sanitation Directorate has invested R863,6 million for the current financial year ending June 2024, towards City-wide water and sewer pipe replacements. We need to proactively maintain, rehabilitate and replace water pipelines to ensure a continuous, reliable water supply to our residents.

‘This year’s proactive pipe replacement programme is progressing well and more than 36 426m of water and 41 825m of sewer pipes have already been replaced. We will continue to monitor progress as roll-out expands to new areas, to benefit both our residents and businesses in Cape Town,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water Sanitation.
