Water from private boreholes not meant for sale

The Department ofย Waterย and Sanitation (DWS) says it has become aware of a trend where people sellย waterย fromย privateย boreholes.

โ€œAny suchย saleย would need a requisite licence to be appliedย for. It is therefore imperative to bring to the attention of all South Africans thatย privateย boreholesย areย meantย to operateย forย the benefit of the occupants of the piece of land/property on which the borehole has been drilled.

โ€œThe recent practice ofย secondary trade ofย water, particularly as observed currently in the Western Cape, is therefore illegal.ย Privateย boreholesย areย forย privateย use,ย forreasonable domestic use, and thereforeย notย to be commercialized,โ€ said the department.

Section 22 of theย Waterย Services Act prohibits the transaction onย waterย without authorisation.

โ€œIn the main, the Nationalย Waterย Act remains the principal piece of legislation guiding any use ofย waterย in the country,โ€ the department said.
