Modular water purification facility expands Aquazania’s national footprint

South African water infrastructure company Aquazania has unveiled a containerised water purification and bottling facility as it invests in modular production to strengthen its national manufacturing footprint.

Known as Aquazania in a Box, the mobile facility is housed inside a standard 40-foot shipping container and was conceived, designed and engineered by the company’s in-house team.

The development forms part of Aquazania’s strategy to grow its national footprint while giving the business greater flexibility to establish production capacity where demand exists.

The concept emerged from a practical operational challenge. As the company expanded nationally, it identified the need for a faster, more flexible way to establish production facilities without compromising the quality and service standards expected by customers.

Rather than relying solely on permanent infrastructure, the containerised units can be deployed in new regions and relocated when operational requirements change. The model creates a flexible production network that supports both expansion and business continuity.

“This innovation solves multiple challenges at once,” said Thomas Looser, chief executive officer of Aquazania.

Aquazania’s modular water purification and bottling facility is housed inside a standard 40-foot shipping container and features automated production, remote monitoring and quality control systems.

“It allows us to expand into new regions faster, strengthen our ability to serve national customers, and significantly reduce operational risk. Instead of relying solely on traditional brick and mortar infrastructure, we have created a network of mobile production facilities that can operate wherever they are needed most.”

Built for flexibility

Modular infrastructure is increasingly being adopted across industries as businesses look for faster ways to expand operations while managing costs and reducing project lead times. Containerised facilities can often be commissioned more quickly than conventional brick-and-mortar developments and offer greater flexibility as operational requirements evolve.

Each Aquazania in a Box unit incorporates automated purification technology and remote monitoring systems that continuously track water quality throughout the production process. If water falls outside required specifications, the system automatically shuts down until the issue is resolved.

Aquazania’s technical specialists can monitor and diagnose the facilities remotely, while automated cleaning processes help maintain production consistency and reduce maintenance requirements.

The project was conceived, designed and built entirely by Aquazania’s engineering team, reflecting the company’s investment in local engineering capability and product development.

“Aquazania in a Box represents far more than a new product,” Looser said.

Expansion plans underway

Aquazania plans to deploy five Aquazania in a Box units before the end of the year as part of its national expansion strategy.

New production facilities are planned for Rustenburg and Witbank, while operations in Bloemfontein, Gqeberha and East London will be upgraded using the mobile production system.

The rollout is expected to increase production capacity while improving the company’s ability to service customers across multiple regions without relying exclusively on fixed infrastructure.

Beyond bottled water production, Aquazania believes the technology has wider applications where reliable access to purified drinking water is essential.

Potential uses include large corporate campuses, mining operations, disaster relief initiatives and remote locations where conventional water infrastructure may be limited or unavailable.
