Precision measurement: The foundation of effective climate control

By Specialised Climate Engineering®

IN any climate-controlled environment, the equipment doing the heating, cooling, ventilation or dehumidification tends to get most of the attention. But behind every control decision is something much smaller: a sensor measuring what is actually happening in the environment.

Temperature, humidity, CO2 and differential pressure data tell a climate control system when and how to respond. Accurate, stable measurement allows equipment to respond to actual environmental demand, maintain specified conditions and perform consistently.

The importance of that data increases as the environment becomes more critical. A poorly specified, incorrectly applied or inaccurate transmitter can affect the entire control strategy. Equipment may operate unnecessarily, increasing energy consumption, while conditions can move outside specification. In critical facilities, inaccurate measurement can introduce compliance risks, compromise product integrity, disrupt production, and increase operating costs.

The level of measurement required depends on what the environment is protecting and what the business needs the system to achieve.

A small variation in an ordinary occupied space may have relatively limited consequences. The same variation in a pharmaceutical environment, cleanroom, cold store, climate-sensitive manufacturing process or data centre can be considerably more significant.

Before a sensor is selected, we begin by understanding what is being controlled and why, to determine the accuracy, stability, durability and measurement technology required at each point. Is the priority product safety, regulatory compliance, energy efficiency, process consistency, indoor air quality, or equipment protection?

Room transmitters monitor CO2, relative humidity and temperature in occupied environments and cleanrooms, while wall-mounted instruments can serve more demanding HVAC and industrial environments. Duct and immersion transmitters provide feedback within air-handling and process systems, while differential-pressure measurement supports applications such as filter monitoring, room pressurisation and cleanroom airflow. Outdoor instruments provide environmental information for outdoor-air compensation, while handheld meters support diagnostics, commissioning and spot-checking.

The objective is not simply to install more sensors but to measure what matters and where it matters.

Initial accuracy is only one part of measurement performance. Long-term stability determines how reliably a transmitter continues feeding accurate information into the control loop. Drift increases recalibration requirements and maintenance interventions, while creating the risk of a system making decisions based on increasingly inaccurate information between service intervals.

This is why Specialised Climate Engineering® (SCE®) chose to partner with Vaisala for HVAC measurement in South Africa. The technology is engineered for continuous industrial duty, from sub-zero cold stores to high-humidity processing environments, combining precision with long-term stability. Minimal drift means calibration can be measured in years rather than months, while selected instruments carry two- to five-year warranties.

For facility operators, this supports reliable control with fewer recalibrations, less maintenance and a lower total cost of ownership.

World-class instrumentation delivers its greatest value when it is correctly specified and integrated into the system it controls.

Through SCE®’s authorised Vaisala partnership, we assess the application, understand the performance requirements, identify the appropriate measurement technology and integrate it into the control strategy from the outset, rather than treating the transmitter as a standalone component.

This is particularly important within the specialised environments we engineer. In systems such as DrySPACE® and DryWORKS®, accurate measurement provides the feedback needed to verify that the temperature, humidity and environmental conditions the system was designed to maintain are actually being achieved.

For facilities focused on energy efficiency, compliance, productivity and consistent environmental conditions, measurement is fundamental to how effectively the entire system performs.

By combining Vaisala’s measurement technology with SCE®’s climate engineering expertise, integration and local support, SCE engineers a measurement strategy around the performance requirements of the facility itself.
