March madness hits the Mother City: a jam-packed month of events awaits

From the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Open Book Festival Youth Fest, Cape Town Carnival to the Cape Town Surf Pro, the Mother City is in for a busy month of events.

The Southern Mail Wynberg Family Festival, that started on Friday, got the month of events under way with three days of live music, carnival rides, delicious food, treats and more.

The event, which ran until Sunday at Maynardville Park, kept patrons entertained with live performances from Jarrad Rickketts, Amy Jones, Mark Haze, Sons of Salessie, Berry Trytsman and DJ Ashton Parenzee, among others.

‘Our Events Permit Office is anticipating to permit over 60 events of varying sizes for the month of March. As the City, we are enthused by the many event organisers who choose Cape Town. We will continue to play our role as an enabler for the events industry whether through funding, logistical support or regulation through our permitting process,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The month of March will also include the following events:

Cape Town Cycle Tour

The world’s largest-timed cycle race pedals through the Mother City on Sunday, 10 March 2024, where over 30 000 cyclists will be taking on the 109km and 49km routes around the Cape Peninsula.

Cape Town Ladies Open

The best local and international female golfers on the Sunshine Ladies Tour will hit the greens for the 10th edition of the Cape Town Ladies Open.

Over 70 professionals will showcase their talent alongside amateurs who use the platform to gain international experience on the professional circuit.

Open Book Festival Youth Fest

The annual Open Book Festival takes its exciting and dynamic literary event, tailored for young readers to schools, libraries and book lounges.

An offshoot of the Open Book Festival, the Youth Fest includes poets, writers, illustrators and locally based storytellers. It offers engaging sessions with authors, interactive workshops, and a lively platform for fostering a love of literature and creative expression among the youth.

Events range from storytelling and activity sessions through to presentations, performances and workshops. They take place in schools, public libraries, the Museum of Childhood, Bertha House and at the Book Lounge.

Absa Cape Epic

The foremost mountain bike stage race in the world attracts over 1 000 riders for eight days of non-stop action for the coveted title of Absa Cape Epic champion.

The Epic, which kicks off in the City of Cape Town, goes through four Western Cape towns with a finish in Stellenbosch.

Cape Town Carnival

Cape Town’s colourful celebration of its cultural heritage brings massive floats, costumes, and over 1 400 performers from different communities across the city in front of thousands of locals and visitors.

Centred on the theme “lekker”, the carnival’s 2024 edition promises a truly tasty treat for the spectators while also staying true to its traditions.

Red Bull Shay’ iMoto 2024

Motorsport meets stunt work with lots of flair is the name of the game for Red Bull Shay’ iMoto.

Some of the country’s top spinners go head-to-head at Century City to crown the next champion.

Cape Town Surf Pro

The Surfing South Africa-sanctioned event sees top senior surfers from around the country and the world catch waves in the Mother City.

The competition aims to uplift and develop local athletes and provide amateur surfers with opportunities to compete on the international surf stage.

Spar Women’s Challenge

The Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge will see over 10 000 runners take to the streets of Green Point, Sea Point and Mouille Point.

Held in five other cities in South Africa, the event features a run or walk 10km challenge, or 5km fun run for professional and recreational runners.

With fabulous entertainment along the route, food vendors, prize-giving and lucky draws, it promises to be a fun day for the participants.
